Originally home to farm hands in the 60s and later a handful of local skydivers, this kit trailer formally rested in a state of nostalgic disrepair.
Sited gracefully along the edge of an open field at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains- its weathered exterior, and concealed solid bones indicated a fresh start.
The first phase required leveling the steel carriage frame and reinforcing the concrete block piers and footings. Next, the chassis was stripped to the studs and a new sub floor and insulated sheathing was installed.
From early in the design process, we utilized the unique structural qualities of the light weight modular framing to elevate the experience of entering the space.
To combat the low aspect of 7'-0" drop ceilings, we opted to expose the roof trusses and transform the utilitarian construct into a room encompassing light element.
The former state of the trailer kit not only shows how the design maintained its original form as well as key spatial elements that were structurally sound.
Our use of the Shou Sugi Ban technique was modified on White Eastern Pine as opposed to the traditional Cedar. This process not only achieved the perfect shade of brown for the newly retrofitted cladding , but also cauterized the pores in the wood to naturally seal it. To further slow down the natural lightening of the wood, we coated each plank in a transparent UV protectant.
